cuomo came down, i was at the meeting. he met with the speaker. governor kristi came down, mayor bloomberg came down. he met with the majority leader. we were asked to submit detailed document. they all submitted absolute documentation. when we asked is there anything else required? no. you have given us all we need. when the bill came from the senate we were told there was some pork in the bill. that was taken out of the bill. the bill was going to be voted on on the house floor was exactly in compliance what the republican leadership asked us to do. let me just say at this time in my dealings with him, majority leader cantor has been very straightforward, very direct. last night i know that he was fighting to get the bill on the calendar. it was the speaker, for whatever reason, walked off the floor and said that the bill was being pulled. i don't enjoy saying this. i consider myself a personal friend of john boehner. and john boehner personally has been very helpful to me over the years. it pains me to say this. but the fact is dismissive attitude that was shown last night tow

being behind you, whether you're governor o'malley or governor christie or governor cuomo or the other goafns means that we -- governors means that we need to pass this bill, and we want to pass it because we know that lives were devastated and livelihoods were ruined. in maryland, gosh, we faced these unique challenges -- hurricanes, blizzards, urban and rural communities affected. and our own lower shore, some somerset county was hit. that has one of the highest unemployment rates in the city -- in the state, close to 10%. 18% of the residents moved below a line of 35 $$35,000 a year. and what i said then and i say now, they were rich in community spirit but they don't always have a lot of cash. why? because their jobs are in agriculture, seafood, industries hard hit by the decline in species, by drought, by high fuel prices. when we look at their homes, families live in the same house for one or two, three generations. an appraiser might come by and wonder about what is the value of that house. but if you've gotten that house from your mom and dad, from your grandpop, some people go

christie a republican, and governor cuomo should be deeply disappointed and angry that this congress would adjourn without addressing the pain of our fellow citizens. i have been to new york. i have walked the beaches. i have seen their homes that have been destroyed with my colleague, greg meeks. i have talked to to members of congress. congressman crowley, congressman pallone, congressman rothman, all who have had their citizens deeply damaged by the ravages of the perhaps storm of historical proportions that struck the northeast. none of us is immune, not from a tornado, flood or a fire. i deeply regret that i can't change this opinion, but it's not what we ought to be doing that. there are republicans that are grieved by this action and democrats on this floor who are deeply grieved by this action. this is not the right thing to do. i would hope it would be reconsidered. we have asked our members to stay here. every one of them. knowing full well they wanted to go home, just for a day toe see their families. mr. speaker, i would hope this decision would be reconsidered. i would hope th

to use the path to allow making a three-point. one is in accordance with the approach that governor cuomo in new york and governor christie have taken, we at the port authority believe in accountability. we understand there will be accountable to the federal government and for federal funds and notably to the taxpayers for every dollar we receive. second point i'd note is the port authority has already spent out of pocket about $200 million since superstorm sandy occurred on october 29. those dollars are real, we're prepared to demonstrate every dollar. third, i would note that we're not talking, none of our agencies are talking about a bridge to nowhere. we are talking about restoring tunnels and bridges and train stations, whether it's new jersey transit, nda, which exists, which serves millions and tens of men's of passengers a year. and the damage in the case of cat are to equipment that was installed 50, 60, 70 years ago which is frankly only available and can be viewed at the smithsonian. and we're prepared, mr. chairman, to demonstrate every come and be accountable for every dollar
